Medium Close-Up

Medium Close ups are a shot usually of shoulders, head and upper chest. They are used to focus on a single person and not groups of people. They are used on magazine covers to show the model's face and their feelings. It is on a more personal level so people can see the persons emotions and opinions on something or somewhere. Aspire to being like that person and feel like they do about the same thing, like what they like.

College Magazines

Language - Red top connotes passion and wanting to learn. Attractive girl is used as an ideal or role model that people seeing the magazine will looks up to and want to be like. The camera is only focused on her and it is just her in the shot, this suggests how important she is and you could be like her too.

Ideology - Enjoying Education and wanting to come to college and be happy like this person. Passion for learning and the importance of individuals.

Institution - College, Magazine. Wanting to promote College life to people and how good it is to be in college to the audience.

Audience - Students, Parents and Staff. Shows the ideal student and what they want to be like as well.

Representation - Smiling because they are happy about being in college and learning. They are individual and alone in the picture to show their importance.

Language - Bright happy colours show how they are happy to be in college and to be achieving what they are. Attractive model creates and ideal, readers will want to be more like this person and enjoy college as well. The colour yellow connotes youth and childhood which is what college is the last step of.

Ideology - Education is a good place and people are happy there.

The Brief

Preliminary exercise:

Using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of an new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of an student in the medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the content page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.

Main Task: 

The front page, contents and a double page spread of a new music magazine. all images and text used must be original, produced by you - minimum of four images.
