Font Decision

This is the font I decided to use as my main font for masthead and headings. It is quite conventional with a good mixture of straight lines and minor curves.
This is my masthead in the font above, but I have also edited the 'T' to extend more to the right, so as to make into more of a logo style.

Possible Front Page Images

These are all of the image I took as possible images for my pop music magazine.

Posed but not enough happening in the shot, too still and dull.

Good connotations and bright picture

Too still, not enough movement or anything interesting in the shot for a pop music magazine.

Framing has cut off the models hands and colours do not match.

Background is dark and not white enough.

Good image but the use of prop could lead to  bad anchorage to the image in a music magazine.

Positioning of prop guitar makes it look too big compared to the model.

Good shot. Well framed, relatively simple but  works well

Posed shot with prop but the image looks too still and background looks too dark.

Quirky pose, interesting shot with sunglasses going forwards,  adds depth to the shot.

Bad frame, has cut off the end of the guitar, and background is too dark.

Colour Scheme

The colour scheme of my magazine will be very busy and full but bold colours will make certain parts stand out over other the top of others and fill the page. This would keep my magazine conventional to the pop music genre. In the example bellow we see only 5 very simple colours and combining this with the many layers of the front page it creates the busyness often seen within pop, that draws in the audience to read further into the page and to the bottom layers of stories and plugs. In my magazine, I hope to use this mass of simple colours as well and to try and fill the pages with images.

Font Ideas

These are fonts I chose out from www.dafont.com, I chose them on a basis of how similar they appeared to be to other font styles of other Pop Music Magazines.

Shot Type Examples

Two Shot - Two people in the same shot, side by side
Group shot - More than two people in the shot

Long Shot - Shows whole body
Posed Shot - The Model is in more of a posed/unnatural position.

Medium Close-up - Shoulder/Chest upwards
Close-up with Bad Framing - Has cropped off the top of the image

Music Magazine LIIAR Analysis

Language -  The magazine uses both pink and blue as its primary colour scheme; this appeals to both genders and draws them in. However the content of the articles is more focused on females, with a some of the main focuses being on boys, and fashion.
Ideology -  The magazine uses slang and promotes a very feminine attitude. This will attract the audience to get the magazine bought.
Institution -  Top of the Pops is a BBC branded magazine and Television, both about and playing pop music and the latest music in the charts.
Audience -The audience of this magazine would be teenagers, though predominantly female it would also attract males as well.  The use of slang means that  this young audience can connect to the magazine.
Representation -  The magazine shows only attractive models/pictures in it, showing the boys to be topless and caught by paparazzi, or posing in a photo shoot. The creates a false representation of the celebrity artists and how they act.
Language -This magazine uses quite a lot of slang and collocations within the text, this is used to connect with the young audience it attracts. The use of simple colors has quite immature connotations, with the younger audience can connect with. The masthead of 'We love Pop' not only does it use a heart instead of the word love, and the use of the word 'we' gives the magazine personalisation that connects the magazine and the reader.
Ideology - The ideology created by this magazine promotes the quite heavy stereotypes of girls, with the focus of the magazine being 'Gossip, Fashion, Boys, Uncensored'
Institution - The magazine Masthead is We love pop, this instantly tells the reader what genre of music the magazine is about how they should love pop, from the use of the word we.
Audience- The audience of this magazine would be of young girls (10-15). The magazine heavily features boy-bands and  girls fashion, and the low price would make it a lot more Continent for younger unemployed people
Representation - The magazine has a quite stereotypical representation of girls, show how they can look better and attractive boys they should admire. The the models in the pictures all look directly towards the camera and at the reader connecting with them.

Language - The background and costume in the image both use a lot of pink. This suggests a quite feminine feeling, this also relates to the flowers which are used for this reason. The placement of the model is in front of the text, to show how important they are and how they are over the top of billboards everywhere. The magazine masthead is 'Billboard', this suggests that the artists inside are on billboards and quite popular.
Ideology - The ideology of the magazine is for it to get bought by people. It does this by using language to attract their target audience. They want to keep people up to date with a the biggest artists.
Institution - Billboard, The name Billboard tells us that these are the sort of artists you would see on big posters, and they are well known.
Audience - This magazine would be targeted towards a younger audience of teenagers to young adults (16-24) using light blue, yellow and pink which are all quite childish colours. They are also the main listeners to pop music
Representation - The use of flowers on the dress suggest how Katy Perry is quite happy and and pretty from the connotations of flowers and their colours. She is also stood a quite a innocent pose as well which suggests her vulnerability.

Target Audience

The Target Audience for my Pop magazine will be teenagers ranging from about 13-16 old. This is based off the sort of people that predominantly listen to pop music. The target audience would be used to decide what adverts to put in the magazine and it would also be used to decide on colour schemes.

http://www.abc.org.uk/certificates/18386730.pdf

The magazine 'We Love Pop' is a pop music magazine targeted at teenagers from 13-16. In a 5 month period from launching they sold 50,505 copies of their magazine. The price of £2.99 is cheap for a monthly magazine, and supports the younger audience with less disposable income.
The magazine is publish by Egmont, and from a news report at launch they commented on how the pop music magazine was a difficult industry, but that they believe the younger target audience will help them succeed.

http://www.qthemusic.com/
Q is another popular music magazine, however Q magazine has a higher age average of 29 and costs £3.50. Its is predominant audience is young male professionals, and the use of multimedia and social-media will help with the relatively young audience in the modern day.

Genre Research:Pop Music

History
Modern pop music originated in the 1950s, coming from rock and roll. The term popular music can cover multiple styles of music and the genre is based off what is in the top of the charts at the time. It borrows elements of urban, dance, rock, Latin country. Nonetheless the core elements of pop are the medium to short length songs, written in a basic format, usually verse chorus structure as well as the use of repeated choruses, melodic tunes and catchy hooks.

Artists

Good example of Pop musicians and artists would be Micheal Jackson, who was titled 'The King of Pop' in his time. More modern artists would include Elyar Fox, One Direction and Miley Cyrus.

Magazines
Pop music magazines include 'Top of the Pops', 'Billboard' and 'We love Pop' they are all aimed at the relatively young audience of 10-15 year old, mostly girls.

Posters in background would interfere with masthead and shot is too long.

There is too much empty space in this image

Model is not pulling a happy face, and the shot is taken from too far away leaving empty space.

Magazine Ideas and Paper drafts.

Masthead: Wyke College Magazine, College Logo
Main Image: Happy Students with college as the background.
Main Story: New block opening next month.
Side stories

Medium Close-Up

Medium Close ups are a shot usually of shoulders, head and upper chest. They are used to focus on a single person and not groups of people. They are used on magazine covers to show the model's face and their feelings. It is on a more personal level so people can see the persons emotions and opinions on something or somewhere. Aspire to being like that person and feel like they do about the same thing, like what they like.
